Modeling with Macro-Financial Linkages High quality books Modeling with Macro-Financial Linkages By:Jaromir Benes,Ms. Inci Ötker,David Vávra Published on 2009-06-01 by International Monetary Fund This paper develops a stylized, small, open economy macro model that incorporates an explicit and non-trivial role for financial intermediation. It illustrates how such a model could be used for policy analysis in an emerging market economy where policymakers are concerned about risks associated with rapid credit growth, financial dollarization, and foreign borrowing, while lacking traditional tools to effect monetary policy transmission, and hence could resort to more direct instruments, such as foreign exchange market intervention and regulatory and administrative measures. Calibrating the model to a stylized emerging European economy, the paper simulates real and financial sector implications of various external and policy-related shocks that could be used as input for monetary policy makin...

On the Origin of MONEY High quality books On the Origin of MONEY By:Carl Menger Published on 2015-10-13 by Cosimo Classics On the Origins of Money is a discussion of the history of money and currency, from its crudest form as cowrie shells, animal pelts, and salt in early societies to the coin and paper money we use today. Rather than focusing on the type or shape of the money, author and economist Carl Menger looks at the reasons behind monetary exchange and why money is so valuable (or where it gets its inherent value). His argument centers on the |saleableness| of the goods or commodities being sold-in other words, the more |saleable| (or valuable or in demand) an item is, the more money it is worth. Hence, money gets its value from the objects it pays for. This short work is an insightful look into the history and value of money for any student or professional economist. Determinants of Barter in Russia High quality books Determinants of Barter in Russia By:Mr. Christian Mumssen,Ms. Irina Dolinskaya,Mr. Simon Commander,Irina Tytell Published on 2000-08-01 by International Monetary Fund This paper analyzes the causes and consequences of non-monetary transactions in Russia, drawing on a large enterprise survey. We show that barter and offsets are linked to liquidity problems at the level of the firm and to arrears in particular. We find evidence that the state has channeled implicit subsidies to enterprises in the form of tax and utility offsets. The findings help explain the rise of non-monetary transactions during much of the 1990s. We show that non-monetary transactions inhibit enterprise restructuring. Our findings suggest that a policy solution to the non-cash problem would require the state and public utilities to phase out arrears and offsets. Review Monetary Policy and Issues

Image
Monetary Policy and Issues High quality books Monetary Policy and Issues By:Lauren C. Williams Published on 2006-01-01 by Nova Publishers In the 1970's, many countries were plagued by persistently high inflation rates, which were thought to cause a significant loss in economic efficiency. Since persistent inflation is considered to be ultimately the result of monetary policy, many countries in the 1990s sought institutional reforms to their central banks to prevent a return to the 1970s experience. A popular reform was to move from giving central banks multiple policy goals to a single mandate of price stability. The single mandate was accompanied by the introduction of an inflation target, in which central banks aim to keep inflation within a pre-defined numerical range. The logic behind these reforms was a belief among proponents that it would remove the political temptation to 'pump up' the economy in the short run at the expense of long-run price stability, and a belief...

Review Economic Thought from Smith to Keynes

Economic Thought from Smith to Keynes High quality books Economic Thought from Smith to Keynes By:Takashi Negishi Published on 2000-01-01 by Edward Elgar Publishing 'Anyone interested in the rational reconstruction of classical or nonclassical economic thought will find much to interest them here.' - J.E. King, History of Economic Thought Modern theory has greatly influenced our reading of the history of economics. This third volume of Negishi's essays gathers together some of his most significant contributions to this subject, drawing as much from seminal works as from material now rarely obtainable. These essays reconsider economic thought in the light of modern theory, from Smith to Marx, and from Marshall to Keynes. Takashi Negishi discusses contributions made both in classical school and marginal revolution literature which are still significant to modern economic theory, and those heralding from Japan which have lacked exposure in the West. The Inflation-Targeting Debate High quality books The Inflation-Targeting Debate By:Ben S. Bernanke,Michael Woodford Published on 2007-11-01 by University of Chicago Press Over the past fifteen years, a significant number of industrialized and middle-income countries have adopted inflation targeting as a framework for monetary policymaking. As the name suggests, in such inflation-targeting regimes, the central bank is responsible for achieving a publicly announced target for the inflation rate. While the objective of controlling inflation enjoys wide support among both academic experts and policymakers, and while the countries that have followed this model have generally experienced good macroeconomic outcomes, many important questions about inflation targeting remain. In Inflation Targeting, a distinguished group of contributors explores the many underexamined dimensions of inflation targeting—its potential, its successes, and its limitations—from both a theoretical and an empirical s...

Heterogeneous Bank Lending Responses to Monetary Policy High quality books Heterogeneous Bank Lending Responses to Monetary Policy By:Mr. John C Bluedorn,Mr. Christopher Bowdler,Mr. Christoffer Koch Published on 2013-05-22 by International Monetary Fund We present new evidence on how heterogeneity in banks interacts with monetary policy changes to impact bank lending. Using an exogenous policy measure identified from narratives on FOMC intentions and real-time economic forecasts, we find much greater heterogeneity in U.S. bank lending responses than that found in previous research based on realized federal funds rate changes. Our findings suggest that studies using realized monetary policy changes confound the monetary policy’s effects with those of changes in expected macrofundamentals. We also extend Romer and Romer (2004)’s identification scheme, and expand the time and balance sheet coverage of the U.S. banking sample. Selected Economic Writings High quality books Selected Economic Writings By:James Mill Published on 2017-09-04 by Routledge James Mill was the consummate utilitarian economist and theorist: his numerous intellectual interests and practical pursuits shatter the net boundaries of modern specialist scholarship in social science.Mill's many-sided genius was primarily a product of the age in which he lived. The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw a remarkable flowering of intellectual genius in Scotland in all of the arts and sciences, which gave the country a leading place in the broad European movement known as the Enlightenment, Mill being in fact only one of many brilliant men Scotland produced at that time.Mill's writings in this volume, first published in 1966, cover his development as an economist and are an attempt to assess his contribution to classic political economy. Particular attention is paid to the formative but less well-known pre-Benthamite period of...
